January 25 Round Up

January ’25 roundup of the Dings

Community

Our Monthly roundup of the chatter in the Dings. Art lab and Hype Dance studio for kids, some pathway closures, more neighbourhood plans, the animal rescue centre shop and pictures of seymours and Jupiter.

We are so excited to be hosting Art Lab’s After School Art Workshops for children aged 6 – 11! The sessions will happen Mondays during February and March after school.

It’s a great opportunity to develop and grow artistic skills using the styles of different artists!

Get in touch to find out more!

Anyone with a kid who would like to dance? These street dance classes are drop in , so you don’t have to commit to a block of sessions – they learn a new dance routine every week

Shared by Steff – check out their site as they have a shop and art classes and lots of other options to support them.

I used to go there with my family when I was a kid. This is rear of the barley mow.

Starry skies over Oxford Street to ring in the new year! If you pop your head outside now and look south, the brightest “star” (visible in the middle of my photo) is actually the planet Jupiter.

I hoped to catch a glimpse of the aurora, but there’s just too much light pollution where we are. The pinky-purple haze in this photo is caused by the red light on a building site crane, blocked by the chimney

Neighbourhood Beat

Bleed Kits

A further two bleed kits installed today at key locations within Bristol city. The first is is on BOND STREET near the junction with YORK STREET. The second is TRIANGLE SOUTH opposite the Brass Pig public house.

Both kits funded as part of the Avon & Somerset Police & Crime Commissioner roll out of 125 additional kits summer 2024.

Development News

A new £350m plan for the wasteland next to Temple Meads station where a 10,000-seater arena was once supposed to be built has finally been submitted to council chiefs – and has been backed by Bristol’s new council leader. Legal & General wants to build 520 new homes – including more than 200 ‘affordable’ homes – two new office buildings, retail space, ‘flexible workspaces’ and a new hotel with conference facilities on ‘Temple Island’, the area next to the Bath Road Bridge that was once known as ‘Arena Island’.

Footpath closure – shared by Steff

Update: These works are starting on Monday 10 February.

We need to close May Walk footpath and the footbridge section of Victor Street Railway Bridge for up to six months for emergency maintenance work.

This is a footpath near Three Lamps junction off the A4 Bath Road in St Philip’s.

Work will include rebuilding sections of a retaining wall, resurfacing the footpath, removing some vegetation, and minor drainage works.

Pedestrians will be diverted across Totterdown Bridge.

Thank you for bearing with us.

A “complex and ambitious” plan to build a short footpath behind Temple Meads is expected to cost £24,000 per metre – and incredible £10m. Bristol City Council is planning to build the Harbour Walkway, connecting the new University of Bristol campus with the ferry stop behind the train station.

But the 400-metre footpath is well over budget and years behind schedule, with an estimated cost of £9.7 million.
